For the best shave, and trust me, i consider myself an expert of sorts on shaving.....first shave w/ the hairs, downward....then follow that by shaving upward against the hairs....it works for me. However, being as lazy as i am, i usually just shave downward and leave that little 5 o'clock shadow....
